- Taiwanese WiMAX licensee Global Mobile has floated a tender for WiMAX base stations and expects to announce the results by the end of the year, Taiwan's Economic Daily News reported. The tender is valued at around NT$400 million (US$11.92 million; US$1=NT$33.55) to NT$500 million (US$14.90 million). Global Mobile aims to lead off WiMAX service in northern Taiwan by starting commercial operations in the second half of 2009.

- Chinese telecommunications equipment provider ZTE announced the October 15 debut of its WiMAX 802.16e terminals in the US market, according to a SinoCast report. ZTE's WiMAX products will be bundled with Sprint Nextel's service and sold at Best Buy stores. Among the batch of products, the TU25 is reportedly the first WiMAX USB modem certified by Sprint Nextel and used in the telecom's Xohm mobile WiMAX network, which began service on September 29, 2008.

- Taiwanese Chunghwa Telecom's planned investment for a 14.9% stake in Global Mobile, previously prohibited by the NCC (National Communications Commision), has been cleared by an appeals committee under the second-term NCC, according to Economic Daily News. After losing its bid for the WiMAX license, Chunghwa Telecom purchased a 14.5% stake in Global Mobile for NT$168 million (US$5.01 million). However, the company was prevented from making further investments in Global Mobile by the first-term NCC in March 2008.

- During his October 30 visit to Taiwan, Intel CEO Paul Otellini is expected to announce an investment plan in Taiwanese WiMAX licensee Vmax Telecom, Economic Daily News reported on October 23. It is projected that Intel will invest approximately NT$400 million (US$11.92 million) for a stake of less than 20% in Vmax. Moreover, Otellini is expected to announce collaborations with four major Taiwanese notebook PC makers - Quanta Computer, Compal Electronics, Acer, and Asustek Computer - on the development of WiMAX applications.
